My Range Rover is a fourth-generation L405 with the 4.4-litre SDV8 diesel, delivered in Corris Grey in 2016. Alongside it is a Mercedes-AMG G 63, of which there are also said to be only two kinds: those heading to the petrol station, and those leaving it. These two V8s are keeping me company as the age of internal combustion draws towards its close. I sometimes imagine making room at home to work on my own cars. For now, I have ten years of records to look back on.

Range Rover L405 4.4 SDV8 in Corris Grey. November 2020.

Products with a heritage refined over several generations tend to have well-documented technical characteristics, their designs having been maintained and developed over many years. High-performance flagships, built at the limits of the technology of their time, sometimes have peculiarities that are less easy to understand. They carry the care and effort of people pursuing the best, and a measure of their ambition too. That is part of the interest.

When I bought the car, an interest in its engineering led me to take out a one-year subscription to TOPIx, Land Rover's online service manuals and technical information. It made a decisive difference to my understanding of the vehicle. Access to the full set of documents for even a single vehicle now costs US$845 a year, making it difficult to expect an independent workshop to buy and read the manuals. This is one reason I have taken an active part in looking after the car while relying on authorised service centres for its maintenance.

Running Costs

Over the ten years since delivery in October 2016, running costs in South Korea, excluding fuel, came to approximately KRW 44.15 million, including the recorded value of work carried out at no charge. That works out at around KRW 4.41 million a year. Paid maintenance and consumables accounted for approximately KRW 19.14 million, and work carried out at no charge for KRW 6.65 million. The remainder was insurance and vehicle tax. Apart from some consumables, all maintenance was carried out by authorised service centres.

USD equivalents are approximate, using the Federal Reserve's rate of KRW 1,325.06 per USD on 23 October 2026.

Work carried out at no charge includes warranty repairs and service campaigns. Actual spending was approximately KRW 37.49 million (US$28,000), averaging KRW 3.75 million (US$2,800) a year or KRW 310,000 (US$240) a month. Paid maintenance included oil-leak repairs, upper control arm replacement and preventive work on the cooling system. Consumables included tyres, batteries, oils, filters and prepaid service packages.

Faults

In ten years, I have had two faults that brought on the engine warning light. Both were repaired at no charge. There was also one oil leak that I found during my own inspections and had repaired. Given the difficulty of managing heat in a V8, I tend to regard an oil leak as something to expect sooner or later. Allowing the engine to cool sufficiently and inspecting it regularly seem a reasonable way to catch a leak before the engine gets covered in oil.

Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor

The exhaust gas temperature sensor failed at around three years and 50,000 km, after the general warranty had expired. It was still covered by the five-year, 80,000 km emissions warranty applicable to my car in Korea and was replaced at no charge. The fault codes I read with an on-board diagnostics (OBD) scanner were P2080 and P0546. There was no noticeable effect on driving performance while the warning light was on.

Oil Level Sensor Wiring

Oil leaking from the oil level sensor can travel along the wiring and collect in the primary turbocharger actuator, eventually causing it to fail. In my car, oil that had accumulated before the service campaign caused the actuator to fail. The fault codes were P0046, P0047 and P0048.

Land Rover technical bulletin LTB01087v4 and service campaign N375 address this by adding another length of wiring harness, reducing the likelihood of oil reaching the turbocharger actuator. I suspect N375 slows the migration rather than providing a complete solution. Even replacing the sensor and wiring inside the sump may leave the same problem liable to recur because of the design. Periodically checking the extension harness for oil seems a sensible way to keep it from reaching the actuator.

Oil Filter Housing Leak

The gasket between the oil filter housing and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler deteriorates with age and begins to leak. This has been a familiar issue since the previous-generation L322, which used the same 448DT engine, so there is plenty of reference material available. It is commonly reported at around 100,000 km, and mine was much the same. I had been expecting it and found the leak during an inspection, before the engine became covered in oil.

The oil filter housing and oil cooler are supplied as a single assembly. Replacing it inevitably allows engine oil and coolant to mix, leaving a fair number of associated items to replace as well. I also asked for the nearby oil separator and thermostat housing to be replaced as preventive maintenance, which added considerably to the bill.

My Own Inspections

These days I drive the G 63 more often, so I occasionally take the Range Rover out for a run, taking the engine up to 4,000 rpm as part of its upkeep, along with an engine-bay clean and a check with the scanner. These are some of the items I look at.

Oil Accumulation in the Intercooler and Diesel Runaway

The secondary turbocharger begins operating at around 2,800 rpm under load, bringing both turbochargers into operation. With so much torque available at low engine speeds, a large-displacement diesel does not often need to reach that range. There have been reports of engine oil entering through the oil separator and other routes and accumulating at the bottom of the intercoolers (charge air coolers).

In Europe, this seems to appear as the relatively mild problem of a large cloud of white smoke when accelerating hard on the road, as the oil burns. In Korea, I suspect the free-acceleration smoke test, which rapidly revs the engine without load during periodic vehicle inspections, can act as the trigger for diesel runaway and severe engine damage.

The Range Rover L405's 448DT 4.4-litre V8 diesel engine
The 448DT 4.4-litre V8 diesel. November 2025.

Runaway can have several causes, but one useful check may be to disconnect the intake pipe at the throttle body and periodically inspect the charge air manifold for oil contamination. As the photograph shows, the throttle body is readily accessible, so the inspection itself is straightforward. A small amount of contamination from blow-by gases may be normal; a substantial pool of oil warrants attention.

A clean manifold does not necessarily mean that oil is not accumulating inside the intercooler. Opening up the pipework around the intercooler and checking directly would be the more conclusive approach. If the car rarely gets used in its higher-output range, it may also be worth asking an authorised service centre about an inspection under the service campaign.

A sticking secondary turbocharger is another possible source of oil leakage. Its operation can be assessed indirectly by reading the mass air flow (MAF) sensor values with an OBD scanner. A rapid rise in airflow on the secondary turbocharger side at around 2,500-3,000 rpm under load would indicate that it is not stuck.

MAP Sensor and Intake Carbon

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor happens to sit immediately downstream of the EGR outlet. Its fate is to be covered in carbon. Cleaning it at around 70,000 km made a noticeable difference to fuel economy, and I have cleaned it roughly every six months since.

I also clean the charge air manifold and throttle body myself, although I suspect there is limited benefit in cleaning the manifold: it has no moving parts and plenty of space for airflow. I would like to clean the narrower intake manifold passages built into the camshaft covers, closer to the intake valves, but that requires removing the injectors and is probably beyond the scope of my own maintenance. For the throttle body, keeping deposits from interfering with its movement seems sufficient.

Front Suspension Knuckles

A recall was issued after cracks in the upper attachment point of the aluminium front suspension knuckles were found to allow the upper control arm to detach. JLR attributes the issue to a material weakness arising from the supplier's manufacturing process. Owners have discussed overtightening and corrosion as possible causes, while LR TIME points to an aluminium clamp design that is sensitive to variations in tightening.

No cracks were found when my car was inspected, and retaining brackets were fitted on both sides. The brackets are intended to prevent complete separation even if a crack develops. Along with the response to oil migration from the level sensor, this seems another example of that peculiarly British sense of what will do. British engineering at its finest. I now visually check the knuckles for cracks on those outings.
